CPA | SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability is at the centre of responsible civil and structural engineering
At CPA, as civil and structural engineers, we work to improve the quality of life.
A fundamental part of which is a duty to all follow-on generations to minimise the impacts that civil and structural engineering activities have on the surrounding world and environment.
Targeting Net Zero and reducing carbon
We monitor the carbon footprint of our projects, considering all appropriate measures to develop sustainable solutions to satisfy the demands we set of ourselves as well as those of our clients.
We operate a Structural Carbon calculation tool for embodied carbon assessment as promoted by the Institution of Structural Engineers. A benefit to utilising this package is that we inform our project design decisions which contribute to achieving the desired maximisation of carbon reduction.
Via our CPA derived suite of civil and structural specifications, we stipulate the incorporation of sustainable materials as well as manufacturing and construction techniques – these include the re-use of construction materials and the inclusion of sustainable components of all structural concrete.
Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS)
It is now widely accepted that there needs to be a more sustainable approach to managing surface water.
Sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) mimic natural drainage processes to reduce the effect on the quality and quantity of runoff from developments and provide amenity and biodiversity benefits.
CPA are committed to and recognise that SUDS can deliver additional benefits including directly to ecology and the surrounding environment through incorporation of elements including swales, rain gardens and detention basins.
When planning or specifying SUDS, early consideration of the potential multiple benefits and opportunities will help deliver a cost effective SUDS scheme with the best results.
Sustainability within our office
As part of CPA’s ongoing growth strategy, we have carefully chosen our new office where we are based at Number One Kirkstall Forge.
This is a purpose-built grade A energy efficient building offering easy access to public transport via the adjacent Kirkstall Forge railway station and the A65 linking us to all major transport routes including a short train journey into the nearby Leeds City centre.
